Show HN: Automatically detect and patch walking-dead states in Sierra games
A developer created a static analysis tool that automatically detects and fixes "softlock" states in classic Sierra adventure games—situations where players can become stuck with no way to win despite the game still accepting input. The tool analyzes decompiled game code to identify dangerous item combinations and room transitions, then derives and installs guards to prevent these traps, with successful testing on four games from the late 1980s and early 1990s. Unlike LucasArts games that prevent unwinnable states by design, Sierra games required this automated patching approach to block progression-blocking mistakes.
