Git commit size depends on file compressibility and directory structure, with zlib compression and eventual packfiles making storage extremely efficient—typically 50-10% of the uncompressed file size for larger commits. Experiments show that even tiny 3-byte changes incur kilobytes of overhead due to metadata and directory tree information, while an empty Git repository starts at about 64 KB and adding 250 small files increases it by roughly 47 KB.
