Unikernels—self-contained applications that function as their own operating systems without traditional OS layers—were historically difficult to develop due to the need to write everything as libraries rather than using existing tools. However, AI tools are now making unikernels more practical by helping developers quickly port missing libraries and reducing the cognitive burden of complex concepts, while simultaneously making them more attractive for security reasons since they eliminate shell access and interpreter vulnerabilities that attackers typically exploit.
