Individual intellectual activity depends on being part of an intellectual community, but AI is dissolving these communities by making private intellectual pursuits less viable. In software engineering specifically, AI has degraded professional discourse, eliminated opportunities for human skill development, and made contributing to the commons pointless—since AI systems absorb knowledge without attribution and humans increasingly defer to AI rather than engage in rigorous thinking.
