QR codes, which can hold 200 times more data than traditional barcodes and were invented by Denso engineer Masahiro Hara in the 1990s, are poised to replace the barcode system that has dominated retail for 50 years. GS1, the organization that controls barcode licensing and has operated as a de facto monopoly since the 1970s, recently announced that barcodes are being phased out in favor of QR codes, marking a fundamental shift in retail infrastructure similar to the original barcode revolution.
