Christie's is auctioning a physical printed IP packet that was actually transmitted by carrier pigeon during a 2001 implementation of RFC 1149, a humorous 1990 technical standard describing internet data transmission via avian carriers. The packet, one of four successful replies sent by Norway's Bergen Linux User Group across three miles using racing pigeons, represents a famous example of early internet culture and technical innovation. The artifact was gifted to RFC 1149's original author, David Waitzman, and is now being sold as a piece of internet history and folklore.
