XCENA and Samsung have developed the MX1, a CXL memory expansion device that combines up to 2 TB of DDR5 memory with onboard compute capabilities, featuring 3,072 RISC-V cores designed for data-parallel workloads. The device connects to host systems via PCIe 6/CXL 3.2 with 128 GB/s bandwidth, includes downstream PCIe lanes for SSDs, and consumes 40W for the chip alone, targeting memory-intensive ML applications that require both expanded capacity and computational power near the memory.
