Why Texas Is Making Data Centers Wait
Texas has paused permits for new data centers after their grid connection queue exploded from 63 GW to 474 GW in just 18 months, with about 90% from data centers seeking power for AI infrastructure. The freeze addresses two core issues: a cluttered interconnection process where developers submit speculative projects across multiple sites, making it hard to distinguish real projects from speculation, and community concerns about noise, water use, emissions, and power bills that often go unanswered by developers. The underlying challenge is that Texas's grid no longer has spare capacity, requiring nearly all new large loads to fund expensive infrastructure upgrades, fundamentally changing how companies can purchase and access power.
