Arvind Narayanan argues that despite rapid AI advances, researchers and developers will have substantial work ahead, viewing AI as an augmentation technology rather than pure automation. He contends that while technical skills will become less valuable, demand will shift toward less verifiable tasks such as evaluation, monitoring, and question-asking in research, and relational skills, domain expertise, and normative judgment in industry. This perspective is grounded in the "AI as normal technology" thesis, which identifies multiple bottlenecks between AI capability improvements and actual task automation.
