Show HN: We Fixed UniFi's Slow PPPoE Performance with PPPoE Half-Bridge
UniFi gateways like the UDM Pro/Max and EFG suffer from poor PPPoE performance (typically 1200-2400 Mbps on connections rated for much higher speeds) because their CPUs lack hardware acceleration for PPPoE, forcing the protocol to rely on single-threaded software processing. ArcBox Labs resolved this issue by offloading PPPoE to a separate device using PPPoE half-bridge mode, allowing them to achieve speeds closer to their 5 Gbps connection rating. Only UniFi's UCG Fiber model, which includes a MediaTek chip with PPPoE hardware acceleration, achieves expected throughput on PPPoE connections.
