Cobalt is an open-source application platform that enables Kobo e-readers to run third-party apps through a launcher, signed App Store, and Rust SDK, with each app running as an isolated unprivileged process. Apps can be installed, updated, and removed over Wi-Fi after an initial USB installation, and a reboot returns the device to stock Kobo functionality. The platform includes various demo apps such as arXiv paper browsing, Hacker News, audiobook creation, and AI-powered tools.
