IRCv3 is a working group that develops and standardizes extensions to the IRC chat protocol, building on core specifications RFC1459 and RFC2812. The group has implemented features like SASL authentication, message metadata, away notifications, and message timestamps, while currently working on standardized account registration, chat history access, Unicode support for nicknames, and client avatars. These extensions are designed to be backwards-compatible with older IRC clients and servers, with participation from major IRC software organizations.
