Researchers at the National University of Singapore have developed electronic fibers that integrate LEDs and touch sensors directly into fabric, creating a flexible touchscreen sleeve that displays images, responds to touch, and survives machine washing. The breakthrough uses a novel interconnection architecture allowing thousands of microelectronic components to connect along a single one-millimeter-thick fiber, with separate layers for display and touch detection. The prototype maintains its functionality after 50 wash cycles and could enable clothing to serve as interfaces for digital information, environmental sensing, and health monitoring.
