EPFL researchers have developed an implantable neural chip called LogSync that monitors communication between multiple brain regions to identify cognitive and emotional states in real time. Unlike existing deep brain stimulation systems that rely on signals from single brain regions or fixed settings, LogSync uses machine learning to analyze network-level biomarkers and adaptively trigger stimulation when specific states are detected, offering a more targeted approach for treating psychiatric disorders like depression and PTSD. The technology was developed with funding from the US National Institute for Mental Health and published in the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits.
