California became the first state to approve tire efficiency standards, which would require replacement tires to meet minimum energy efficiency requirements and include a leaf-rating label to help consumers make informed choices. The regulations, phasing in between 2029 and 2033, are projected to save drivers approximately $1 billion annually while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 2 million tons per year. The standards address the problem that replacement tires are often less efficient than original equipment tires, causing vehicles to consume more fuel or electricity than necessary.
