A Beginning for Mathematics
# Summary AI systems have rapidly advanced from being unable to reliably add numbers three years ago to autonomously resolving major open mathematical questions today. University of Toronto professor Daniel Litt argues that while this progress could threaten mathematical progress if institutions don't adapt, mathematics can evolve to deepen human understanding even as AI becomes capable of producing mathematical results. He proposes that the field must move beyond operationalizing mathematical goals primarily through theorem-proving and instead focus on cultivating mathematical understanding and developing high-quality mathematicians.
