Align AI and Mathematics–To Something Else
Twenty-five Fields medalists signed a letter criticizing severe misalignment between AI companies' goals and those of the mathematics community, arguing that AI solutions are rushed and lack proper documentation and attribution. However, the author argues that the mathematics community itself has failed to align with its stated goal of nurturing conceptual understanding and student development, citing historical examples like mathematician Juliusz Schauder, who was denied support by the mathematical community and murdered during the Holocaust, and Olga Ladyzhenskaya, whose foundational work on the Navier-Stokes equations was underdeveloped.
