Micron has announced it is abandoning its pursuit of 4F² DRAM technology after over two decades of research, instead committing to 6F² geometry for the foreseeable future. This decision stands in contrast to its three major competitors—Samsung, SK Hynix, and CXMT—who are all moving forward with 4F² designs, with CXMT claiming it will deliver 4F² server memory by year's end. Micron's leadership argues that DRAM density is ultimately limited by capacitor spacing rather than cell footprint, making the theoretical 33% density gains of 4F² impractical to achieve.
