University of Toronto researchers have demonstrated that publicly accessible AI models can be used to create an adaptive worm capable of targeting any online device, from laptops to critical infrastructure like hospitals and power grids. The worm can exploit vulnerabilities in networks at minimal cost and with minimal technical resources, bypassing current cybersecurity defenses. The researchers published their findings after careful review with government bodies to alert the cybersecurity community to this emerging threat and enable development of protective countermeasures.
