Intel's 1980 8087 floating-point coprocessor used a sophisticated 69-bit adder at its core to perform calculations up to 100 times faster than previous processors, handling arithmetic, roots, and transcendental functions. The adder overcame the challenge of carry propagation delays by breaking addition into 4-bit blocks and employing the Manchester carry chain technique, which allows carries to propagate through wires at signal speed rather than being slowed by logic gates. This design used Generate, Propagate, and Delete signals to efficiently manage how carries move between bit positions during computation.
