Researchers found that children living in London's Ultra Low Emission Zone (introduced in 2019) showed significant improvements in lung function and growth after the pollution restrictions were implemented, compared to similar children in less-polluted Luton. The study of over 3,400 primary school children provides strong evidence that local clean air zones can help reverse pollution-related lung damage in young children. Scientists emphasize that air pollution stunts lung development in children, increasing their risk of asthma, heart disease, and other serious health conditions.
