A Zhejiang University brain-scan study of 56 young adults found that watching TikTok and Instagram Reels videos temporarily deactivates key brain regions responsible for cognitive control and self-discipline, particularly when viewers complete videos they enjoy. The research, using fMRI imaging, showed reduced activity in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex during short-video consumption, suggesting these platforms may impair the brain's ability to balance immediate gratification with long-term goals.
