Robot writes in languages it has never seen before (2019)

Researchers at Brown University trained a robot to hand-write Japanese characters, and it subsequently demonstrated the ability to write in multiple languages it had never been trained on—including Hindi, Greek, English, and cursive—by simply observing examples. The robot's learning system uses two models: a "local" model that handles individual pen strokes and a "global" model that determines positioning between strokes, allowing it to analyze pixel patterns and replicate handwriting in unfamiliar scripts. The breakthrough demonstrates that the robot learned fundamental principles of handwriting that generalize across different writing systems.
