Previewing the Model Hardware Standard

Anthropic is previewing the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a shared specification that enables AI agents to safely operate multiple laboratory and manufacturing instruments simultaneously by standardizing how devices communicate and integrate with AI systems. MHS reduces hardware integration setup time from weeks or months to hours or minutes, and allows AI agents to autonomously conduct experiments, adjust parameters in real time, and recover from errors without human intervention. The research preview is available to scientific labs and manufacturers, with plans to eventually make the standard open source after developing safety evaluations and best practices.
