Pokémon Go players unknowingly contributed approximately 30 billion environmental scans that have been used to train navigation technology for military drones and robots. Niantic Spatial, which owns the scan data, partnered with defense contractor Vantor in December 2025 to combine ground-level camera-based positioning with aerial drone navigation for GPS-denied operations. Most players were unaware their gameplay contributions would ultimately be used for military applications, raising ethical questions about consent and data use.
