In Australia, a Home Battery Boom Has Helped Cut Wholesale Power Prices in Half

Australia's home battery subsidy program, launched in July 2025, has led to over 500,000 installations in just over a year, helping reduce wholesale power prices by 47 percent. The initiative addresses the challenge of excess solar energy from Australia's world-leading rooftop solar adoption by offering homeowners a 30 percent discount on battery systems, enabling them to store and use solar power during peak evening demand. Energy Minister Chris Bowen noted that Australia now has more home batteries than the United States despite having one-twelfth of its population.
