A new historical analysis challenges the narrative that James Watson uniquely recognized the significance of Rosalind Franklin's famous Photograph 51 of DNA's structure. The research reveals that Franklin had already calculated the key parameters of DNA's helical structure from an earlier photograph (Photograph 49) and deliberately created Photograph 51 as refined documentation for publication, not as an experiment awaiting analysis. Historians and commentators have rhetorically erased Franklin's original insight and scientific judgment by portraying the image as self-explanatory to Watson but not to her.
