Researchers from the University of British Columbia have identified two previously unknown species of sea spiders in the Salish Sea, marking the first discovery of new sea spiders in the region in a century. The new species, Callipallene pilosuspedes and Tanystylum kiixin, were discovered among seven sea spider specimens collected from shallow waters and identified using scanning electron microscopy and DNA analysis. Sea spiders are ancient arachnids with unusual traits including up to 12 legs, skin-based breathing, and the ability to carry eggs on their legs.
