An Arizona appeals court has vacated a 10½-year manslaughter sentence after determining that a judge was improperly influenced by an AI-generated video of the victim that asked for leniency toward the killer. The video, created by the victim's sister using his likeness, showed an artificial version of Christopher Pelkey forgiving his shooter Gabriel Horcasitas, which the sentencing judge said he "loved" and found genuine. The court ruled that the judge's consideration of the AI video was a "fundamental error" that made the sentencing procedure unfair, ordering a resentencing.
