Building on ATProto
Luke Kanies advocates for building decentralized review applications on Bluesky's ATProto (Atmosphere Protocol), which could replace centralized platforms like Yelp and Goodreads by allowing users to own and control their own data. While he believes ATProto has potential to become a foundation for interoperable, community-driven applications with shared data standards, he argues the protocol is currently "not on track" to fulfill this vision due to its developing design. Kanies proposes a "local first" approach where users could combine different specialized tools (review writing, list publishing, sharing) that all operate on the same public data model rather than being locked into single corporate platforms.
