ZK-JPEG: Zero-Knowledge Image Editing and Compression

Researchers have developed ZK-JPEG, a cryptographic tool that uses zero-knowledge proofs to verify an image's authenticity and origin from a camera while allowing for common transformations like JPEG compression, blurring, and redaction. The system addresses the limitation of previous image authentication methods by surviving lossy compression formats and can verify various image edits by integrating them into the compression process. This approach enables detection of deepfakes while remaining robust to legitimate image modifications that would typically invalidate digital signatures.
