z386 is an open-source FPGA implementation of a 386-class CPU built around the original Intel microcode, capable of running DOS 6/7, protected-mode programs, and games like Doom. The project reconstructs the original 386 microarchitecture while using FPGA-friendly optimizations, achieving performance comparable to a fast cached 386 or low-end 486 at 85MHz clock speed. z386 demonstrates that functional CPUs can be successfully built around recovered microcode, following a similar approach to the creator's earlier z8086 project.
