With 86% of the words, you might understand only 38% of an anime's lines

Word coverage percentages on learning sites can be misleading because they measure repeated words rather than comprehension of actual lines. In the anime Frieren, knowing 86% of words only allows you to understand 38% of lines, since each line contains an average of seven words and you must know all of them to follow it. This gap between coverage and comprehension exists across all anime, though shows like Serial Experiments Lain require fewer words to achieve the same understanding.
