A wind turbine at the University of Minnesota's West Central Research and Outreach Center is now producing "green ammonia" fertilizer using only wind, water, and air, rather than traditional electricity alone. This innovation addresses a critical challenge for U.S. agriculture: the Haber-Bosch process for synthetic fertilizer production currently accounts for up to 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions and relies on fossil fuels and volatile international supply chains. By decarbonizing fertilizer production, farmers can meet growing market demands for low carbon-intensity products while reducing vulnerability to geopolitical disruptions and price volatility.
