Wind and solar overtake fossil fuels in Germany for the first time

In 2025, wind and solar power generated 225 terawatt hours of electricity in Germany, surpassing fossil fuels' 217 terawatt hours for the first time, representing 44% versus 43% of total generation respectively. This milestone reflects two decades of rapid renewable energy growth under Germany's Energiewende strategy as the country phases out both coal and nuclear power to meet its net-zero emissions target by 2045. Despite political pressures and opposition from the far-right AfD party, Germany remains committed to its transition plan, with ambitious targets including 80% renewable electricity by 2030 and a coal phaseout by 2038.
