Will Open Source Survive the Agents That Replaced It?

AI agents can now generate code instantly, potentially reducing the need for developers to use open-source packages and eliminating the visibility and recognition that motivated maintainers to maintain them. However, agents rely on learning from existing open-source code and documentation, so reducing incentives for public contributions could cause agents to become stale and outdated. The irony is that while developers seek to escape dependency on open-source maintainers, they may become equally dependent on proprietary AI tools with their own uncertain futures.
