Wikipedia escapes Category 1 designation under the UK Online Safety Act for now

Wikipedia has temporarily avoided Category 1 designation under the UK Online Safety Act following a July 2026 notification from Ofcom, but remains on a "watch list" and could be reclassified at any time. The Wikimedia Foundation views potential Category 1 status as an "existential threat" to Wikipedia and is advocating for a formal exemption for public-interest platforms under the legislation.
