Why some people mow a lawn better than others

Researchers conducted an experiment where nearly 31,000 people mowed a virtual lawn to test how efficiently humans solve path-planning problems. Over half of participants came within five moves of the optimal solution, with 16% achieving perfect efficiency, demonstrating that humans are remarkably good at intuitively finding near-optimal routes despite the enormous number of possible solutions. This performance mirrors previous research showing that people use mental shortcuts (heuristics) to quickly solve complex problems that would require computers to evaluate trillions of possibilities.
