Major technology companies including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI have launched Akrites, a coordinated effort to address vulnerabilities in critical open source software faster than AI-assisted attackers can exploit them. The initiative responds to AI's ability to discover vulnerabilities in minutes rather than weeks, outpacing maintainers' capacity to patch them, by creating a centralized system for coordinated vulnerability discovery, remediation, and responsible disclosure. The consortium aims to shift focus from reactive patching to proactive upstream fixes and downstream deployment to protect the global critical infrastructure that relies on open source code.
