Virginia bans sale of geolocation data
Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger signed S.B. 338 on April 13, 2026, amending the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act to ban the sale of geolocation data effective July 1, 2026. Virginia joins Maryland and Oregon in prohibiting geolocation data sales, while several other states including California, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Washington have proposed similar legislation. The ban follows increased regulatory scrutiny, including a 2024 FTC settlement and a California Attorney General investigation into the location data industry.
