Owen, the author's newborn son, died from alveolar capillary dysplasia (ACD), a rare genetic lung disease that went undiagnosed despite whole genome sequencing at a leading genetics lab. After Owen's death, a pathologist-confirmed lung biopsy and subsequent genome reanalysis by a specialist revealed that Owen was missing a DNA segment that regulates the FOXF1 gene, which is critical for lung development. This tragedy inspired the author to found Gamow Labs, presumably to improve genetic diagnosis and prevent similar cases from being missed.
