Researchers at Kyoto University identified two distinct neural pathways in the mouse brain that control different aspects of habit formation: one pathway determines whether a behavior becomes habitual, while the other controls the intensity of habit execution. Using a rapid training method, the team traced how behaviors shift from goal-directed to automatic, and demonstrated that artificially manipulating these circuits can selectively promote or alter habits. This discovery suggests that understanding habit mechanisms could eventually help people gain better control over their own habitual behaviors.
