A hacker successfully restored a locked Cricut Maker found in e-waste by creating a USB proxy device using a Raspberry Pi RP2040 that intercepts and rewrites the machine's serial number packets, bypassing Cricut's deactivation security measures. After attempting direct firmware modification and network-level interception, the author discovered the communication protocol lacked encryption or checksums, allowing them to spoof a valid serial number at the hardware level. With new rollers costing just a few dollars, the reclaimed device was returned to full functionality.
