Uber arbitration award over Emily Normandin-Parker's death

A 23-year-old UCLA graduate, Emily Normandin-Parker, was struck and killed on a California freeway in August 2023 after an Uber driver dropped her and an intoxicated friend at an unsafe gore point following an argument over a cleaning fee. An arbitrator ordered Uber and driver Vu Tran to pay her parents $40 million ($20 million each) in July 2026, finding that Tran knew both passengers were intoxicated, could have stopped at a safer location, and showed more concern for recovering the cleaning fee than for the passenger's safety. Uber disputed the arbitrator's finding that the company was legally responsible for the incident.
