Tracking down a Zsh history data loss bug

A long-time Zsh user discovered and debugged a data loss bug where commands would mysteriously disappear from their shell history file (~/.zsh_history), sometimes losing years of entries. The investigation, using file system monitoring tools like inotify and core dump analysis, ultimately revealed the root cause, which was fixed in Zsh version 5.9.2 released in July 2026.
