Toronto-Based VPN Provider Plans to Quit Canada over Lawful-Access Bill
Psiphon, a Toronto-based VPN provider with 20 million monthly users that helps people in oppressive regimes bypass online censorship, has announced it will relocate out of Canada if Bill C-22 passes. The proposed lawful-access bill would require electronic service providers to grant Canadian police and intelligence agencies secret surveillance capabilities, which Psiphon says would compromise the privacy protections essential to its users. Citizen Lab director Ron Deibert warns the bill would make it impossible for privacy-preserving tools to operate in Canada.
