The Teen Portraits That Captivated Sofia Coppola

Photographer Joseph Szabo's new book "American Teen" features black-and-white portraits of teenagers from Malverne High School on Long Island taken primarily in the 1970s and 1980s. The images capture adolescents with a natural, unselfconscious presence that reflects a pre-social media era, contrasting with today's curated online personas. Szabo began documenting his students after starting to teach darkroom photography at the school in 1973, using the camera as a tool to engage disaffected students.
