The 28th General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) has resolved to increase the maximum allowable difference between UTC and Earth's rotational time (UT1-UTC) by 2035 to ensure UTC remains continuous without future adjustments, addressing the needs of critical infrastructure and industrial users. This change is necessary because Earth's rotation is slowing, making negative leap seconds increasingly probable, and a continuous UTC time scale is essential for transportation, energy, telecommunications, and space systems. The resolution allows for a transition period until 2040 for updating equipment and systems that transmit and use the UT1-UTC difference.
