The Raspberry Pi Interactive Timeline · 2006–2026

The Raspberry Pi Foundation was established in 2008-2009 to address declining interest in computer science education by creating an affordable computer for young people to experiment with. The first Raspberry Pi Model B launched on February 29, 2012, for $35 with a 700 MHz ARM processor and 256 MB of RAM, causing server crashes at distributors due to overwhelming demand and becoming the best-selling British computer of all time. Production was moved to a Sony factory in Wales in September 2012, and the Foundation continuously improved performance at the same price point, including doubling RAM to 512 MB at no extra cost by October 2012.
