The power of collaboration: How we can reduce traffic congestion
Google Research conducted a large-scale study across 10 major US cities demonstrating that network-aware routing in navigation apps can reduce traffic congestion system-wide. By modifying Google Maps to guide even a small fraction of trips away from congested segments toward alternative routes with similar travel times, the intervention measurably improved driving speeds and reduced emissions for entire cities. The study, published in Nature Cities, establishes a framework for shifting from individual trip optimization to cooperative routing that enhances overall network efficiency.
